Within the realm of the cosmos glowing white spheres of intense burning light floated about in the nether-sphere, illuminating the almost otherwise pitch-black space-emphasis on almost. For within the dark and absolute there existed comets and meteorites and all the other rocky remnants of once breathing planets, scattered here and there, alone with no sentience to understand the depressing and horrifying implications of their solitude. Indeed, no one would even know of their existence had it not been for the occasional star here and there, lighting up the place, almost as if they didn’t want to forget their fallen. Yet they could only brighten up the space for so long; stars dimming away into nothingness was no surprise these days, and it would only be a matter of what the living ones called time before they all ceased to be…But enough time for the dwindling stars to realise that, one by one, their universe was dying, and there was nothing to stop it.

Still, there was one small glimmer of ‘hope’; not all the planets were gone. Indeed, one dark purple planet still orbited a yellowing sun giant, although for the planet, ‘Cosmic Midnight’, it wasn’t really orbiting, but more following a pretentious delusional celestial asshole while contemplating the reasons why he hadn’t died like all the other planets.

Floating around, he had no one to talk, except for the sun but he was too much of a dick to answer back. Reckoned that he had better things to do, such as split himself up over and over again. Please! What a load of fluff. He only had a couple of cycles before he too died like the rest, why even bother? And then there were the life-forms living on his planetary friends. Ha! The only thing worse than speaking with the arrogant sun dick was a bunch of pitiful, barely sentient, selfish inconsiderate life-forms who didn’t even take good care of his friends at all. Especially the humans, almost like they were trying to kill them all.

Except…There were no more humans, no more living organisms, not even any more living planets. Haha…They couldn’t finish the job in the end, if that’s what they were really doing…But they did enough. Enough to doom the universe. Now all his friends were dead, scattered across space (but not time), fragments of cadavers of friends he will never see again. …At least he will never see those balding primates ever again.

Floating around, Cosmic Midnight, the last of his kind, continued to rotate around, and around and around, keeping in time in a meaningless orbital dance with a sun that still couldn’t let go of his former glorified role in the universe. Sigh…The planet didn’t even care anymore. Nowadays he just felt emptiness, and regret at the fact that never had he ever in his life ever harboured living beings…Except for one. But she was gone as well.

Sigh…What was even the point of moving? Why hadn’t he died yet? Why hadn’t he forced himself to die? What was even left in this universe to keep him going? Why did he still feel…Needed? These questions and more had haunted Cosmic for Celestial knows how long. But never did he ever have an answer…Or at least one that was satisfying.

…There was still the fact that there was no one, no one at all. It had been so long since the cosmic midnight planet had even seen a planet harbouring life, let alone one with those genocidal idiots.

As he rotated for the umpteenth time, frustrated with his burden of being the only one left, and bored and pretty much done with himself and life, something loomed right in front of him…Something that just didn’t make sense. He must have been dreaming. For looming in front of him was a sky blue hunk of rock, eyes closed, but flashing pearly-white teeth, humming a little medley. And he knew. Somehow he knew. She was back, somehow she was back. He didn’t care how, he was just glad. His heart had never felt so whole. His soul had never felt so alive.

She moved in, eyes wide open now, dazzling like a thousand lapis lazulis. And he moved out, right out of the sun’s orbit-he wouldn’t have cared anyway. And they closed in, eyes staring at each other, for as many eternities anyone could imagine. They then shifted out, and began to revolve around each other, turning and twirling, sparks emanating off of their celestial bodies. Dancing like the heavens still existed, the two celestial bodies executed such flawless moves that they would have made Romeo and Juliet quite jealous. It was so magical, so colourful, so…exciting. It made the two lone planets feel alive again.

And Cosmic’s eyes were stained with the tears of laughter and joy. He was finally whole again…He felt free and unburdened by the hardships of life…For he was finally something again.

And he never wanted to let go.

Hey there!

Well first off, happy Valentine’s Day! Secondly, this story was a doozy. Instead of, you know, trying to find a Valentine, I was penning this story, so anyone who wants to read it, please. It really wants to be read.

Bye bye now!
